The Impact of Delta Gamma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) at DePauw University
Editor’s Note: This article was written and submitted by Ayusha Bhattarai, a DePauw junior and co-president of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma.
In September, the Delta Gamma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) at DePauw University had the incredible opportunity to attend the GIS 52nd Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. This conference brought together GIS members from across the country and professionals from insurance and financial services firms. As a newly established chapter, it was an honor for us to represent DePauw University at this prestigious event.
Empowering Students in the Insurance and Risk Management Industries
Gamma Iota Sigma aims to promote and sustain student interest in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science as professions. At the conference, we had access to a variety of speaker series that covered different aspects of the actuarial and insurance industries. These educational sessions provided valuable insights and knowledge. We had the opportunity to participate in sessions such as “Communication Breakdown,” “Cyber Risks: Trends and Predictions,” and “The Data Science Actuary: Using Technology to Transform Ratemaking.”
One of the highlights for many attendees was the keynote session titled “Compensation Dos and Don’ts.” This session provided valuable guidance on discussing compensation and offered important insights into the intricacies of these conversations. Another eye-opening experience was the “Understanding your Enneagram” session, where we explored personality types and their impact on communication styles and interpersonal relationships. This session equipped us with valuable self-awareness and teamwork skills that will benefit us in our future endeavors.
Enhancing Professional Skills through Mock Interviews and Resume Reviews
Alongside the educational sessions, students had the opportunity to receive advice and guidance on improving their resume and interview skills. Mock interview sessions allowed us to practice our interview skills and receive constructive feedback. Undram expressed her gratitude for the resume review session, which helped her fine-tune her resume and make it more compelling to potential employers. These resume reviews and mock interviews were instrumental in preparing us to confidently engage with recruiters during actual interviews.
Networking Opportunities and Connections
Attending conferences provides invaluable networking opportunities, and the GIS conference was no exception. Students had the chance to engage with representatives from various firms and network with fellow aspiring actuaries. Tina described the experience as a chance to learn from professionals and gain valuable insights into the actuarial science field. The connections made during these networking sessions will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our careers in the future.
Celebrating Excellence in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, and Insurance
The Annual Awards ceremony at the conference was a significant event for our chapter. The Delta Gamma chapter of GIS at DePauw University received recognition as one of the excellent chapters, an achievement we are extremely proud of. This recognition speaks volumes about the commitment and dedication of DePauw students to excel in their academic and professional pursuits.
Acknowledgments and Future Opportunities
We express our gratitude to Professor Zhixin Wu’s Spencer Course Development Grant and AF Group for their financial support, which made our attendance at the conference possible. We are also thankful for the support from the HHMI grant, the Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dr. Bridget Gourley, and the Dean of the School of Business and Leadership, Dr. John F. Clarke.
As attendees, we left the 52nd Annual GIS Conference feeling inspired and well-prepared for our future careers. We look forward to future events and conference opportunities that will further fuel our passion for the insurance and risk management industry.
