Uncovering the Benefits of AI in HR: Going Beyond the Hype

Using AI to Promote Diversity and Boost Productivity in HR

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving field of human resources (HR) technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly prominent role. AI technologies, especially generative AI, are being integrated into HR solutions, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. While there may be some fatigue around the hype surrounding AI, it is crucial for HR leaders to understand how these technologies can positively impact their organizations. In this article, we will explore two independent studies that shed light on the ways in which AI can improve diversity in hiring and enhance productivity in the workplace.

Improving Gender Diversity in Hiring

A study conducted by researchers at Monash University and the University of Gothenburg titled “Does Artificial Intelligence Help or Hurt Gender Diversity? Evidence from Two Field Experiments on Recruitment in Tech” examined the impact of AI recruitment tools on gender diversity. The study focused on the male-dominated technology sector and explored both labor supply and demand.

In the first part of the experiment, the researchers created an online job posting for a web designer and randomly varied whether candidates were informed that their application would be evaluated by AI software or a human hiring team. The results showed that the use of AI in recruitment increased the proportion of women completing the application by about 30 percentage points compared to men. This led to a narrowing of the gender gap in application completion rates by 36%. Women were more likely to complete the application, while men were less likely.

In the second part of the experiment, the researchers studied the impact of AI technology during the assessment of applications. They used over 500 professionals from the technology industry to act as the hiring team and examined evaluations for candidates assessed using AI software and those assessed by human evaluators. The study found that women were scored significantly lower than men when gender-revealing names were shown. However, when names and gender were hidden, women’s scores were equal to men’s. Adding AI to the recruiting process increased the representation of women and significantly changed the gender distribution of potential hires.

The Productivity Effect of AI Technologies like ChatGPT

Another area where AI is making an impact is in improving productivity in the workplace. OpenAI’s ChatGPT solution is a tool that has gained popularity for its conversational capabilities. A study conducted by MIT’s Department of Economics sought to determine how ChatGPT influenced productivity and worker empowerment.

In the study, over 450 college-educated professionals were assigned writing-based tasks, and half of them were randomly given access to ChatGPT. The study found that the group using ChatGPT was able to decrease the time taken to complete a task by 11 minutes and produced higher-quality work outputs. Moreover, participants who used ChatGPT were more likely to continue using it for future tasks. The study concluded that ChatGPT and similar AI tools could empower workers and complement human work, potentially closing the inequality gap between skilled and unskilled labor.

Embracing AI for Better HR Outcomes

As the use of AI in HR continues to grow, it is essential for organizations to seek out reliable and independent sources that analyze the real impact of these emerging technologies. The studies discussed in this article provide evidence that AI can deliver on the expectations placed upon it, particularly in improving diversity in hiring and enhancing productivity.

HR leaders should remain open to exploring the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT. These technologies have already demonstrated their ability to streamline tasks, improve efficiency, and elevate the quality of work. By leveraging the power of AI, organizations can create a more diverse and inclusive workforce while driving better business outcomes.

Editor Notes

Promoting diversity and improving productivity are two critical goals for organizations across industries. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, HR leaders can achieve these objectives while staying ahead in the rapidly changing digital landscape.
